Tallulah 1882 – Our First Coffee Shop

Address: 105 Moss St, Tallulah Falls, GA 30573
website: tallulah1882.co
Tallulah Falls, Georgia
Today, we set our sites on the Blue Ridge Mountain chain in search of fine southern coffee. Our coffee shop adventure originates in the quaint town of Tallulah Falls, Georgia. It was once a bustling resort town much like Niagara Falls. While we have no idea where our adventure will lead us, we do plan to follow the historic train-line of the Tallulah Falls Railroad.
First, we begin our coffee quest in a specialty coffee and tea shop known as Tallulah 1882. It is just days before Christmas, and what a wondrous holiday treat it is to find this historic train station cafe. Interestingly, it is a recent addition to the town. Built circa 1882, first as a train station of the Tallulah Falls Railway, and now as an amazing coffee shop conversion. Today it is transformed into a spectacular escape for coffee and tea lovers in the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains.
Artisan Distinction
Tallulah 1882 has positioned itself as a connoisseur of artisan-level teas and coffees. While they have swiftly gained a reputation for the quality of their offerings; the craft of their service is the real show-stopper. Their hallmark is a completely original approach to coffee and tea presentation.
Consequently, people travel from miles around to simply partake in the experience that is unique to this tiny cafe. Where else can you dine in a historic train station that is decorated in the period of its origin? Yet also, relish the full history of coffee and this mountain region in one enchanting cup!
A Blended Destination
I selected the Gerome Cafe Latte. It is an outstanding espresso-based drink created with steamed milk. Then, their barista blends hazelnut and cocoa, generously sprinkles powder of orange peel, and finally tops it with a crown of flower blossoms. Talk about a coffee presentation!
The Gerome Cafe Latte (picture below) is both gorgeous and delicious. A work of art really. The barista artisans of Tallulah 1882 rely on the specialty coffees of Cool Beans Coffee Roasters in near-by Marietta, GA. It is touted as “The best, freshest coffee in the South!” With this fact, we can hardly argue, as Cool Beans is known for roasts that originate from the volcanic earth of the Lake Atitlan, Guatemala region. At an elevation of 950 to 1600 meters, this altitude provides their coffee with its distinct and balanced flavor. Consequently, this flavor is what keeps the patrons of Tallulah 1882 returning time and time again to this amazing coffee shop.

Holiday Express
We are amidst the Holiday season, as we nestle into this cozy eclectic coffee house. While the steam engine train line of Tallulah Falls once transported locals and tourists between Cornelia, Georgia and Franklin, North Carolina; it now provides a destination for travelers of a different sort. Coffee aficionados and tea enthusiasts.
The Tallulah Railway is circa 1871 and conducted its final run in 1961. Consequently, this train station cafe has an unexpected charm, magnetism, and centuries old character. The interior decor is a reflection of another era, and is filled with antiques and artifacts that reveal a window in time.

Appalachian GRANDEUR
The cafe owner sprinkles historical photos throughout in her design. This careful attention to detail transports you to another time and place.
You can just imagine arriving on the platform of the Tallulah Falls Station, full of anticipation and wonderment for the exciting travel that lies ahead. Though today, our destination is coffee, we are treated to so much more. As we enjoy the origin of this special cafe, we must also bring honor to the sacred native land of this region – Cherokee Land.
Native Land
The Cherokee call Tallulah Falls “Ugunyi”, and they view the falls with trepidation and respect. Additionally, the word Tallulah is a girl’s name of Native American origin. It means “leaping water” in the Choctaw Indian language. How amazingly indicative this name is. As you stand within the gorge of Tallulah Falls, you can clearly understand the meaning our Native American ancestors attached to this sacred place.
Its six cascading waterfalls will eternally carve and shape hard layers of rock. Consequently, the water that falls over these rocks is constantly being mineralized. The water becomes the life-force to all plants, animals and people of this region. Our ancient Indian ancestors were right to stand in awe of these magnificent waters. We too, should not ignore the fact that water is one of the life-giving forces of the coffee bean itself. Interestingly, it is an integral requirement in every cup brewed!
Today, people flock to this corner of north-eastern Georgia to revel in the divine glory of Tallulah Gorge, while overlooking the jaw-dropping 1,000 foot chasm. It takes millions of years for water to carve through rock; creating spectacular falls like these.

Tallulah Gorge State Park
Moreover, Tallulah Gorge State Park offers over 15 miles of hiking trails. Its picturesque views will take your breath away.
Furthermore, it is the site of numerous films shot on location, including: the 2023 Netflix movie “Dog Gone,” “Deliverance” in 1972, and “The Great Locomotive Chase” in 1956.
The entirety of the Blue Ridge Mountains is a natural treasure to behold. Whether you’re drawn here by its gorgeous landscapes, pristine waterfalls, or a quest for its specialty coffee; this region will not disappoint.
White Birch Provisions – Our Second Coffee Shop

Address: 60 E. Savannah St., Clayton, GA 30525

Clayton, Georgia
Next, our Appalachian coffee adventure takes us through the Blue Ridge Mountains to the small idyllic town of Clayton, Georgia. Founded in 1819, Clayton is the county seat of Rabun county. Here the local coffee shop of choice is White Birch Provisions, and don’t be surprised if you find a line forming ‘out-the-door’ of this hometown favorite.
The “Old FT,” as the Tallulah Falls Railroad became known, was extended north through Rabun County, reaching Clayton in 1904. It transformed Rabun County’s economy by opening the isolated community to the outside world for the first time in its history. Within a few years of the TF’s arrival, Main Street was lined with hotels and boarding houses. No doubt, all serving coffee! The small town sprang to life with businesses catering to passengers; who could now make the trip from Atlanta to view the “Niagara of the South” in just a matter of hours.
Specialty Coffee Standards
As the locals will tell you, White Birch sets the specialty coffee standard in Clayton. Their baristas are a tight-knit group of consummate professionals, who hone their coffee craft like a well-oiled machine. Finally, our patience is rewarded with cappuccinos that are generously lathered to full brim with steam-foamed milk that magically blends into their delicious coffee.
Finally, White Birch Provision gives nod to its mountain roots with a charming rustic interior. It is a reflection of the beautiful natural surroundings of this entire region. It beckons you in with Edison-style lighting reminiscent of a bye-gone era.

Likewise, White Birch also relies upon Atlanta based Cool Beans Coffee Roaster, which offer some of the worlds best 100% Arabic coffees. Among their fine selection you will find award-winning coffees from Ethiopia, Indonesia, Guatemala and Burundi. Not only do they make the highest-grade coffee, but also serve sweet and savory pastries from their on-site bakery. Or possibly you’d enjoy a cigar from their humidor? Whatever provision you prefer, you’ll surely find it at White Birch.
Bent Willow – Our Final Coffee Shop

Address: 473 E. Palmer St., Franklin, NC 28734
website: bentwillowbaking.com
Franklin, North Carolina
Franklin, North Carolina is our final stop on the Tallulah Falls Railroad coffee shop adventure. Some might argue that we’ve saved the best for last!
Bent Willow is a young bakery and coffee shop located on the east side of downtown Franklin. It breathes new life into the ancient cultures of both specialty coffee and artisan sourdough bread making. Moreover, they seamlessly blend the old into the new. Their building is historical, but the coffee experience at Bent Willow is completely modern. What a joy it is to have past and present brought together so richly with coffee at the center!

Coffee Craft
Bent Willow’s baristas utilize skill and technique to coax bountiful flavors out of Portrait Coffee Roaster blends. Further, their knowledge extends from an appreciation of the coffee’s country and region of origin. Additionally, they’ll tell you, the roaster’s specialty process from farm to cafe is key. At every level of their coffee chain, great care is taken. So, their excellent coffee is clearly a direct result of this careful process.
Past Influences Future
The Bent Willow cafe occupies a historic family home. It is an heirloom, circa 1922, of the owner’s great-great-great grandfather. The McCall family home is now also home to the entire community of Franklin, North Carolina. Quite literally, it is where the people of Franklin come to ‘break bread,’ and gather together.
The cafe’s creed is that “all people are welcome, for the value of their authentic selves.” It is a place where heritage-artisan methods are utilized and respected for all they offer new generations. Consequently, this ensures a vibrant future with vital ties to the past.

Cherokee heritage
The heritage of the entire Franklin area lies first in its native people. Historically, its name is “Nikwasi”, by the Native American Cherokee Tribe. It means ‘center of activity.’ This town contains a highly significant site of the original Cherokee Mound, and its remnants are cherished today by the Franklin community. The mound itself is believed to be at least 1000 years old.
Community Experience
Not surprisingly, the regulars at Bent Willow see this wonderful cafe as their “Nikwasi” or “center of activity.” They now rely on it as a meeting place, and gathering spot for new and old friends alike. Further, it is a place to enjoy with family, or simply feel like family. Most importantly, sage tradition and new ideas are respected in equal measure within these cafe walls.
From the moment you step upon the porch, there is a sense of warmth and comfort that envelopes you. As you enter through the front door, the aromas of espresso and sourdough bread baking permeate the air and welcome you in.
Beyond Coffee
Whether you’re craving a classic brew coffee, or are simply drawn in by a nostalgic longing for community, you will find it here. It is an experience worth repeating again, and again. Specialty coffee creations paired perfectly with your choice of sweet or savory baked-goods.
We’d suggest a Sun-dried Tomato and Goat Cheese Strata. Then, pair it with a Macchiato. Or, try a Double Origin Espresso with a Pear and Crystallized Ginger Scone. By simply gazing into the glass baked-goods case, you will be mesmerized by the all tantalizing choices that lie before you. But take heart, it’s impossible to go wrong, because absolutely everything is delicious!
Finally, don’t forget to pick up a sourdough loaf of bread to take home. Or better yet, hang out with owner and local, Bethany McCall, and a few friends to make one yourself! She offers small community classes in “Artisan-Sourdough-Bread-Baking” on-site.
Upon Reflection
When we initially concocted the idea of this Blue Ridge Mountain coffee journey, we had no idea of the incredible treasures we’d find along the way. Isn’t that the beauty of exploration? You never know what you’ll find, and with any luck, the reality far exceeds your imagination.
