The reasons to add Rengensburg on your list of specialty coffee houses are too numerous to count. Their preserved historical and architectural legacy of more than 2,000 years puts all of Europe’s rich and diverse culture at your disposal with every step you take. We at The Coffee Critics adored our ramblings through its cobblestone streets on our easy paced history lesson and a deep dive into a coffee culture that cannot be underestimated.

History of Bavaria’s Coffee Houses

Of Regensburg’s 1,500 listed buildings, 984 of them are registered on the UNESCO World Heritage site. But of course, our first stop is always coffee, or ‘kaffee’ in German. Is it no wonder that the German term for coffee is so similar to the region of its origin? The birthplace of coffee in Kaffa, Ethiopia, between the 8th and 10th centuries AD.

While pondering this coffee connection, we made our first stop into Moccabar, a coffee espresso bar in the heart of Regensburg’s charming Old Town that captured our attention. This coffee establishment’s namesake strikes another cord. The Yemen port of Mokha on the Red Sea was the main sea gate for foreign trade of coffee in the 16th and 17th centuries, and monopolized it for roughly 300 years.

Coffee Houses Colonial Beginnings in Mokha

Moccabar; what a clever and significantly named specialty coffee house. We sat at their front picture window watching a parade of patrons and tourists as we indulged in our first drinks, Mochachinnos, what else? It’s not a surprise that they were exquisitely prepared, or that we remained there for hours, reveling in coffees, coffee-cocktails, conversation and laughter. We struck up a dialogue with Regensburg University college students, and found ourselves engaged in topics ranging from the city’s hot spots to regional and US politics, and life philosophies. Amazing how similar we all are when sharing a cup of coffee.

CAFE ANTON

The next morning, we promised ourselves that Cafe Anton would be first on our list. It quickly became our favorite spot for breakfast while in Regensburg. Who doesn’t want coffee and dessert for breakfast?

I do, especially when German quality is the first priority! Their Latte Macchiato was a pampering experience that left me feeling like royalty. Crafted from their Dinzler Espresso Osteria blend, which is made of the finest Arabicas, slowly and carefully drum roasted to bring out the distinct body of this light and elegant first-class coffee. Its origins span across Zambia, Brazil, Guatemala, Columbia and India creating a well-rounded and lightly sweet coffee that any aficionado would appreciate. Dinzler is a famous Bavarian Roastery where coffee is life, and this has been reflected in all they do since the 1950’s.

Though coffee always rates first with us, Cafe Anton’s careful selection of all ingredients was the hallmark of their service. The almond crusted apple strudel paired beautifully with my macchiato, while the choice meats, cheeses and seasonal fruit of our charcuterie plate were of the freshest regional selection.

From Coffee to Castle

After this incredible coffee excursion, we headed just a few blocks away to the Schloss St. Emmeram, Thurn and Taxis, a vast Rococo palace complex built on the foundations of a Benedictine monastery. Some of its sections date back to the 8th century, and it comprises over 500 stately rooms. So, grab your table at Cafe Anton, and head to this enchanting Bavarian castle, we promise the memories of Regensburg coffees and culture provide moments of pure treasure.

SCHIERSTAD – COFFEE BAR & CAFE

Address: An d. Schierstadt 1, 93059 Regensburg, Germany

Old Stone Bridge Leads to Coffee Houses

On our final morning in Regensburg we crossed the Old Stone Bridge or “Steinerne Brücke” to the Stadtamhof, and delighted in lattes and croissants at Schierstad Bar & Cafe. The lattes were artisan crafted by their barista from an Aromaria roast of one hundred percent Arabic beans, culminating in a dark and velvety rich flavor that pairs perfectly with our final Bavarian pastry.

It was a cold and cloudy winter’s day as we retraced our steps across the Danube river. This early 12th-century bridge had carried Charlemagne’s crusade over its sixteen arches, and had remained the only bridge into Old Town Regensburg for over 800 years. Today it transported us for the love of German coffee, culture, history, and its people. We were sad to be leaving this magical Bavarian land, but happy to be enriched in a way that will live in our hearts forever.
